The extension to the building proposed adaptable teaching space for up to 200 students, facilities for conferences, summer school and industrial events, as well as integrating undergraduate laboratory space for engineering work and research offices for post graduate students. The extension not only proposed important new facilities for the faculty, but also planned to create a new entrance to the Queen’s Building from Woodland Road and improved linkages from this part of the University Campus through to Royal Fort Gardens. The development necessitated the removal of a number of mature trees which were re-provided out of the Replacement Policy Standards throughout the Campus.
The applications were submitted after extensive pre-application discussion with the Local Planning Authority and the undertaking of both stakeholder and public consultation. Due to difficult site circumstances, a number of Section 73 applications were required as the development progressed in order to amend the design of the scheme. These were successfully negotiated with the Local Planning Authority. CSJ Planning Consultants were also responsible for the discharge of all conditions throughout the construction period.
