Tintagel Castle Bridge Opens

Tintagel Castle Bridge Opens

The spectacular pedestrian footbridge linking the mainland to the island at Tintagel Castle has now formally opened. The bridge and the wider landscaping project to improve footpaths in and around the Castle and provide a step free access across the bridge to the island has been a complex and challenging project.

The Castle attracts some 250,000 visitors a year to this major English Heritage site and the introduction of this bridge not only helps accessibility but reinstates a crossing where once a land bridge connected the two parts of the Castle site. Once planning and scheduled ancient monument clearance had been obtained, which included preparation and submission of an Environmental Impact Assessment for the scheme, the difficult process of construction commenced. Having no vehicular access made it a tricky place to bring 50 tonnes of steel and 40,000 slate tiles to, all of which had to be delivered by helicopter and assembled by a crane on a cable stretching across the 60m high the ravine. The bridge has been well received both by the public and critics and has added intrigue and excitement to this important historic site.

CSJ Planning Consultants have been involved with the project since inception, being responsible for the preparation, submission and negotiation of both the planning application and environmental statement, as well as dealing with the discharge of conditions throughout the construction process. Working with William Matthews Architects, Ney and Partners Engineers and Nicholas Pearson Associates on landscape and ecological issues, CSJ are proud to have been involved in this project and to have seen such an interesting addition to the rugged North Cornish coastline come to fruition.
