Planning permission granted for 9 floating homes at Sawley Marina

CSJ Planning Consultants has recently secured planning permission to install 9 static floating homes at Sawley Marina, Long Eaton. The homes will be leased or sold by the marina operator, British Waterways Marinas Ltd (BWML), to customers on a ‘full residential’ basis.

The homes are contemporary in style and are easily distinguishable from other craft converted for residential use. The larch finish and shallow pitched roofs evoke a somewhat rural ‘feel’ and the appearance can be likened to that of a log cabin (with a modern twist), which complements the waterside location. Unlike most other houseboats, the floating homes will be purpose built for residential use. As such they will be better equipped for everyday tasks (particularly cooking, washing and bathing) and will offer customers the marina lifestyle in a more comfortable environment.

The floating homes will offer a unique and relatively low cost housing option, which will contribute towards the wider district housing supply and mix.

Suitable mitigation measures will be put in place to ensure there will be no harmful impact on the marine environment or water quality. Likewise, flood protection measures will be implemented to ensure future residents will be safe if water levels rise.

This is the second planning permission for floating homes recently secured for BWML (the first was at Priory Marina, Bedford) and this type of accommodation is proving very popular. There is a high level of demand for these products, particularly from existing marina customers, and they provide a unique opportunity for unlocking residential development on the waterway network.
