CSJ Brooke Smith has successfully won permission to change the use of part of a marina adjacent to the Great River Ouse in Bedford.

The decision by Bedford Borough Council means that up to 48 berths at the Priory Marina in Bedford can now be used permanently by some boat owners, who will be eligible to use local authority services and play a full part in the local community. Previously, there was a limit on how long they could stay.

British Waterways Marinas Ltd, part of British Waterways, instructed CSJ Brooke Smith to submit a planning application which sought planning permission for a change of use of part of the 5.5-hectare marina. The marina itself lies within the defined urban area of Bedford.

The appointment is the latest waterways project for the consultancy. It has worked on a number of waterside regeneration projects including Ferrara Quay in Swansea, the former Courage Brewery in Bristol and Pattisons Farm Hamlet in Kent.

Director Fran Chick said: "The application required a sensitive approach but we put forward a good case on behalf of British Waterways Marinas to the Council, who approved the application, and this will allow some of the berth owners to become a permanent part of the Bedford community."
